Annual Conference 2007
The Federation of Bakers held its seventh Annual Conference on Wednesday, 16th
May 2007 at One Great George Street, London SW1.
This year's event was well attended, with an audience of over 140 senior baking
& milling industry representatives, major retailers, sister trade
associations, civil servants & trade press.
A number of key trade issues were addressed including how the industry can
strengthen its relationship with the Food Standards Agency; how bread will fit into
the health debate in future; and how bakers can adapt their product to fit both
consumers' and retailers' needs.

Dame Deirdre Hutton CBE, Chair of the Food Standards Agency headed an impressive list of speakers, including:
- Jeya Henry, Professor of Human Nutrition at Oxford Brookes University
- Edward Garner, Director of TNS Worldpanel UK, and
- Ian Bentley, Trading Executive – Protein & Agriculture at Marks &
Spencer plc.

This year's Panel Debate was chaired by Sylvia Macdonald, Editor of the British Baker magazine, who was joined by panellists, Dr Andrew Wadge, Chief Scientist and Head of Food Safety at the FSA, Professor Robert Pickard, Director-General of the British Nutrition Foundation, Ian Bentley from Marks & Spencer and Joseph Street, Managing Director of Fine Lady Bakeries. Amongst the topics debated in this session were prescribed quantities, salt
reduction, corporate social responsibility, folic fortification and bread
prices.
