Health and Safety
The Federation of Bakers produces a range of health and safety initiatives
including Safety Memoranda guidance covering both baking industry specifics as well
as
more general guidance, a Contractors' Passport Scheme which is run in
conjunction
with the Safety Pass Alliance, and 'Drive Safe' guidance on raising
awareness and
managing driver fatigue, and industry accident statistics.
The Federation's Health & Safety Committee consists of representatives from Member companies and other industry related
organisations, including HSE, who meet regularly to consult, support and promote
the interest of occupational health and safety in Member companies. It represents
the interests of the Federation in consultations with the enforcement authorities
and other external organisations in matters of common interest relevant to
occupational health and safety.
The committee provides guidance on meeting statutory requirements and achieving
good standards at the work place. In addition, it considers common problems of
occupational health and safety in the industry and methods of resolving them and
to disseminate information on matters of common interest.
Important industry publications are reviewed/revised on a regular basis, in
particular:
Safety Memoranda
The committee continues to review and update the Federation's Safety
Memoranda,
essential industry safety guidance consisting of some 20 Safety
Memorandums
for
reference on a variety of important subjects.
Dust Guidance
This guidance has recently been revised and will be available in the New Year.
Commonly
known in the industry as the 'Blue Book', this guidance sets out the
steps that
should be followed to assess and understand the problem and outlines
a
range of
practical measures that bakers can take to reduce levels of
individual
employee
exposure to dust.
The work of the Health & Safety Committee continues to be a vital element of
the Federation's service to members.
