Gordon Polson, director of the Federation of Bakers, says: “Despite the fact that wheat prices have been increasing for over a year, bread still represents great value for money – with a single loaf able to form the basis of many healthy meals, all for the cost of around a pound.
“Wheat cost increases of 100% in the last 12 months simply could not be absorbed by bakers, so it is inevitable that consumers are seeing the cost of their daily loaf rise slightly.”
